Overcoming Challenges to Attend What is Most Important

Even with two young children in the center of his life, Harry Spurill intends to graduate from Anoka Tech in December with a Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree. And, one day, he hopes his education will lead him to a BMET career in a major hospital, earning well above the national average or working in research and development as an engineer or technician developing ground breaking equipment.

Biomedical technicians play a vital role in health care by ensuring all medical equipment is safe and in proper working condition. But this work involves electronics and math, and neither came naturally to Harry. “My major challenge was that I was completely unfamiliar with anything electronic and had a severe learning curve when it came to math.”

Prior to his start at Anoka Tech, Harry spent nearly 10 years as a logistics specialist in the United States Navy. No stranger to hard work, Harry found the resources he needed to be successful within the college, including an internship that “was the greatest contribution to my classroom success.” Having a good-paying BMET job will allow Harry to take care of what is most important to him: time with his children to “develop their physical, mental and emotional well-being.”
