College welding student earns recognition at national welding competition

David Vlasyuk was selected as one of five Anoka Technical College students to attend FABTECH’s annual conference in Atlanta, Georgia, in November, and what a great selection the Welding faculty made.

“We selected David to attend this conference because he is such a dedicated student, and well on his way to being a first rate welder,” said Welding lab assistant Lisa Glendower.

Competing against 24 other welders at the 3M Speedglas booth, Vlasyuk was one of three winners. FABTECH said unofficially he took second place. Best of show went to a welder with 15 years of experience.

For his efforts Vlasyuk, who plans to graduate in May 2015 with an associate in applied science in Welding degree, earned a 3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet 9100 FX-Air with 3M™ Adflo™ Powered Air Purifying Respirator, valued at $400, along with a sense of renewed pride in his work.

“The competitions included someone from every state, even some from other countries, and actual welding inspectors picked the best in show in each competition,” said Vlasyuk.

Vlasyuk joins a long legacy of Anoka Tech welding students who have been recognized for their work. Most recently Cory Fletcher, Charles Parrish, Dennis Theil, and Andrew Wieland who all placed in the 2014 USA Skills competitions.

The FABTECH conference brought together nearly 27,000 attendees and 1,400 exhibiting companies to experience live equipment demonstration, find cost savings solutions, and network with industry peers. The event also provided learning opportunities with more than 100 educational sessions and expert-led presentations on the latest industry trends and technology in the metal forming, fabricating, welding and finishing industries.

“I saw a lot of new technology,” said Vlasyuk. “Things I didn’t even know existed.”

Anoka Tech’s Advanced Welding certificate program boosts a 100% placement rate.
