Progressive discipline is designed to correct employee behavior so misconduct does not occur or is not repeated. It is not intended to punish. Progressive discipline begins with supervisors clearly communicating their expectations.
Reasons for discipline
Informal process
Formal process
There is a difference between an informal discussion and an oral reprimand. Informal discussions are communications between an employee and a supervisor regarding performance expectations. Oral reprimands are discussions that launch the formal progressive discipline process.
All disciplinary actions require some form of investigation. Investigations identify main issues, facts/documents and witnesses (the who, what, when, where and why an event occurred). Employees are entitled to representation during investigation interviews as defined in the collective bargaining agreements. Employees may waive their right to representation by signing the Waiver form.
For truly egregious acts of misconduct – progressive discipline need not be followed. Contact the Chief Human Resources Officer for more details.
