Plumbing Technology

Plumbing Program

Complete program description

Program Description
The Plumbing Technology diploma program includes technical and general education components. The program provides the skill training for trade entry plus an RPZ certification and apprentice license. Lecture, demonstrations and lab work will be performed at Anoka Technical College and at offsite projects with contractors. Important hands-on experience is gained in the lab and with local contractors.

Industry Description
Plumbers work in a variety of plumbing situations: repairs, residential remodeling, new construction and commercial construction. Techniques and design, the ability to read and understand plans, good diagnostic skills, and installation procedures require good thinking and reasoning skills and a knowledge of plumbing codes. Some apprentices will specialize in one of the plumbing fields. Lab work includes: soldering, brazing, welding, pipe threading, fitting identification, gluing and pipe cutting.

Wages/Outlook/Advancement
Wage information is available from the Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Experienced plumbers and pipe fitters may become supervisors for plumbing contractors. Others go into business for themselves.

ACCUPLACER Test Requirement: ACCUPLACER testing in math, reading and writing. Any needed developmental courses must be completed before receiving a diploma or an A.A.S award.
