Metro North Adult Basic Education (ABE) is a free program to help adults age 16 or older (who are not enrolled in a secondary school) develop basic skills including reading, writing, math, English and technology.

To enroll in Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs, students must attend ABE Orientation. Orientation is held in the Student Success Center, Room 190-O. Orientation and assessment can take up to four hours; please plan accordingly.
At Anoka Technical College, all students declaring a major are REQUIRED to take the ACCUPLACER Computerized Placement Test (CPT). Before you take the Accuplacer, you can brush up your skills with Metro North ABE for FREE. Classes are designed to meet the needs of adults.
If you are no longer in high school, you may review basic skills by entering the FREE Metro North Adult Basic Education program. The ABE teacher will help you identify areas you need to study and provide you assistance in gaining necessary knowledge and skills.
REQUIRED REVIEW BEFORE OPTIONAL RETEST
For all students no longer in high school, review with Metro North Adult Basic Education is required before retesting. The ABE teacher will help you identify areas you need to study and provide you assistance in gaining necessary knowledge and skills.
The ABE teacher will determine when you are ready to retest, and provide you an Authorization to Retest form. You may not retest without it.

Anoka Technical College (ATC) has partnered with Metro North Adult Basic Education (ABE) to provide assistance to all learners by establishing a Reading and Language Lab. A Reading Specialist will diagnose your reading needs and provide direction based on your identified needs. Instruction will be done individually, on the computer, and in small groups.
Students may self-select attendance to individual or small group sessions, or be referred by staff or faculty.
Reading and Language Lab services are free for all learners who want to improve reading skills:
- Build comprehension
- Practice higher-order thinking skills
- Expand vocabulary
- Learn to decode multi-syllable words
- Develop fluency and speed
- Prepare for demanding college reading
- Enhance reading enjoyment
- Increase level of reading comfort and confidence

The Tests of General Educational Development (GED) provide individuals lacking a high school credential opportunity to earn a State of Minnesota GED Diploma. The five-test GED battery measures the academic competencies generally required of a Minnesota high school graduate. Metro North Adult Basic Education (ABE) offers free English Language Learner classes at their Anoka Technical College (ATC) location. The classes are designed to help students develop occupational and English communication skills to successfully gain and retain employment and continue on to occupational training or college.
