How To Apply For Aid
Step 1: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

 

The FAFSA is the first step in applying for financial aid. The application is free and is available online.

You will need the following things to complete your FAFSA:

  • All income records such as (but not limited to) federal tax returns, W-2's, SSI, VA Benefits, etc. You will need information from the 2008 calendar year for the 2009-2010 FAFSA; you will need information from the 2009 calendar year for the 2010-2011 FAFSA
  • Parents' federal income tax information, Social Security Number, and date of birth if you are a dependent student for financial aid purposes.
    • To be Independent for FAFSA purposes you MUST:
      • Be 24 years old by January 1, 1986 (for academic year 2009-10)
        Be 24 years old by January 1, 1987 (for academic year 2010-11)
      • Be married
      • Have children or other dependents you support 51%
      • Be an orphan, ward of the court, emancipated minor, or homeless youth
      • be pursuing a Master's Degree
      • Be a Veteran of US Armed forces or currently serving on Active Duty for purposes other than training
  • A Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the Department of Education to sign your FAFSA electronically. Parents of Dependent Students will also need a PIN to electronically sign the FAFSA.  To obtain your PIN go to http://www.pin.ed.gov
  • When you are ready to complete your FAFSA go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov
