Medical Assistant students provide vision and hearing checks to elementary children
Anoka Technical College second year Medical Assistant students visited PACT Charter School in Ramsey in early November to provide the elementary students vision and hearing checks.
Eleven Medical Assistant students and one faculty member provided the checks to approximately 165 students. PACT Charter School and Anoka Tech’s Medical Assistant program (MAST) have had this partnership for many years, and plan to continue.
“By visiting elementary schools, the students get to practice audiograms, Snellen exams and interacting with pediatric patients,” said Lisa Sailor, the Medical Assistant Program Director. “It’s mutually beneficial for the elementary students and the Medical Assistant students. Working in the elementary schools is fast paced, challenging, loud at times, but most importantly, a great experience for all!”
The college hopes to extend the vision and hearing checks service into other school districts, including the Elk River School District, depending on schedules.
Students enrolled in the Clinical Procedures course learn the audiogram (hearing test) and Snellen chart (vision), using each other to practice performing it correctly. The course covers pediatrics but does not include bringing children into the classroom for a real life practice setting.
