Anoka Technical College graduate receives inaugural Phi Theta Kappa scholarship

Kara Roberts, a 2018 graduate of the Anoka Technical College Legal Administrative Services program, is the recipient of the inaugural 2018 New Century Workforce Pathway Scholarship.

The scholarship is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), and supports students at associate degree-granting institutions who plan to enter the workforce upon completion of a degree or certificate.

“Education can change lives and help ensure that young people can realize their full potential,” said Helen Price, executive director of The Coca-Cola Foundation. “The Coca-Cola Foundation places a high priority on supporting education to help build strong communities.”
New Century Workforce Pathway Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. More than 2,000 students were nominated from more than 1,600 college campuses across the country. Only one New Century Workforce Pathway Scholar was selected from each state.

“Kara is the kind of student which hardly needed to have her assignments reviewed. She is very attentive to detail, driven and an all-around great student!” said Debbie Allen, Legal Administrative Assistant Instructor and PTK advisor. “She has done volunteer work within our college and community, and was a PTK vice president, all while working as an internship at an Anoka law office.”

“We congratulate Kara for receiving this prestigious scholarship, and we are honored to partner with the Coca-Cola Foundation to recognize her outstanding achievements,” said Phi Theta Kappa’s President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. “Scholarship programs like this are integral for creating opportunities for students to succeed as they prepare to enter the workforce and for putting college completion within reach.”

Kara Roberts has ambitious professional plans.

“Now that I have spent the last two years learning about the ins and outs of laws and government, I feel that I am more equipped to continue where I left off,” said Roberts. “I want to be the communicator between lawmakers and struggling families and youth. I feel that with my continued experience in the non-profit world and with my new education, I am ready to not only address problems but to offer suggestions and solutions in hopes that we can better help people in certain situations.  My long term goal would be to start a legislative team at a local non-profit.”

The New Century Workforce Pathway Scholars will be formally recognized during the Association of Community College Trustees’ (ACCT) Congress in New York City in October 2018.
