Policy 3.10: Credit Hour

Policy Statement

Course delivery at Anoka Technical College utilizes many different modalities.  The award of academic credit for a course is based on the amount of time a student receives instruction, and works beyond instruction time on the course content.  The “credit hour” is the basic unit of measure used for determining college credit.  The accepted definition of a credit hour is 1 hour of instruction and 2 hours of work outside of class per week for a full semester.  Therefore, in accordance with Federal Government guidelines, Anoka Technical College defines the credit hour as:

An amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally-established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than:

(1)    One hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two additional hours of out-of-class student work each week for approximately 16 weeks for one semester of credit, or the equivalent  amount of work over a different amount of time; or

(2)    At least an equivalent amount of work as required in paragraph (1) of this definition for other academic activities as established by the institution including laboratory work, internship, clinical, externship, independent study , and other academic work leading toward the award of credit hours.

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to articulate the definition of academic credit for the institution that is in compliance with HLC guidelines and in line with nationally accepted standards.
