Step 1: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The FAFSA is the first step in applying for financial aid. The application is free and is available online.
You will need the following things to complete your FAFSA:

All income records such as (but not limited to) federal tax returns, W-2's, SSI, VA Benefits, etc. You will need information from the 2008 calendar year for the 2009-2010 FAFSA.

Parents' federal income tax information, Social Security Number, and date of birth if you are a dependent student for financial aid purposes.

A Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the Department of Education if you want to sign your FAFSA electronically. Parents of Dependent Students will also need a PIN to electronically sign the FAFSA.
