Nursing Assistant Competency Evaluation

Prerequisite: Candidates must preregister and complete an application form prior to the test day. Candidates must also fulfill one of the eligibility requirements.

The competency evaluation includes a written/oral examination consisting of 60 multiple choice questions and demonstration of five basic skills performed by a Nursing Assistant.

Eligibility: Listed below are the eligibility levels for candidates who are applying for NA or NA/HHA written/oral skills examination. Documentation of elegibility must be broughtto the test site. Two forms of identification also required.

1) Nursing Assistant: Candidate who has successfully completed a state-approved Nursing Assistant training program.

2) Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide: Candidate who has successfully completed a state-approved Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide training program.

3) Home Health Aide: Candidate who has successfully completed the ASI skills and written examination and is on the Minnesota registry and has now completed a state-approved Home Health Aide course.

4) Test-Out Candidate: Candidate who does meet any of the other three eligibility routes. Examples: Nurse Aide or Nursing Assistant trained in another country, a candidate never trained as a nursing assistant, a candidate who has not worked as a Nursing Assistant in the past two years, a Nursing Assistant from another state who does not qualify for reciprocity, or a student nurse or graduate nurse candidate.

The signed application form and two forms of identification must be brought the day of the exam. Enrollment limited. Pre-registration is required.
