Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide Competency Evaluation

Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide (NA/HHA) certification in Minnesota is obtained through successful completion of this examination. The evaluation consists of a written (or oral) examination and a skills examination. The Written examination consists of 70 multiple choice questions. The Skills Evaluation will include demonstration of five randomly selected NA/HHA skills.


IMPORTANT: Two forms of identification and the signed application must be brought the day of the exam. Enrollment is limited and preregistration is required.

Candidates must fulfill one of the eligibility requirements:

  1. I. Nursing Assistant: Candidate has completed a state-approved nursing assistant training program within the past two years.
  2. II. Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide: Candidate must have completed a state-approved NA/HHA training program within the past two years.
  3. III. Home Health Aide: Prove you have previously completed a state-approved nursing assistant training program, have passed the NNAAP Examination, are on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry, and later completed an approved home health aide program.
  4. IV. Test-Out Candidate: 1) If you have trained in another country;2) if you have not taken a nursing assistant training program; 3) if you have not worked as a nursing assistant in the last two years; 4) if you are from another state and do not qualify for reciprocity or are not in current status on transferring registry; or 5) if you are a student nurse or graduate nurse candidate.
