CPR Heartsaver/AED (Adult & Pediatric)

The CPR Heartsaver course teaches participants Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO) to all lay rescuers, particularly those people who are expected to respond to emergencies in the workplace. The combined diverse learning courses for adult, infant, and child victims include a presentation of the chain of survival and warning signs of cardiovascular emergencies; signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking. Skills demonstration and peer practice sessions are an essential part of the course. The course teaches mouth-to-mouth ventilation and rescue breathing using barrier devices that are typically used for CPR in the workplace. The importance of early Automated External Defibrillation (AED) will also be covered. A CPR Heartsaver card is provided upon successful completion to participants at the end of this course.

CPR for Health Care Provider
This course follows American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines to teach the skills of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for victims of all ages including ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask device, use of oxygen, automated external defibrillation (AED), and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). It includes diverse learning opportunities, including warning signs of cardiovascular emergencies; signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, choking and other medical emergencies. Skills demonstration and peer practice sessions are an essential part of the course. The course is intended for participants who provide health care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in and out of hospital settings or for anyone who is required to take a Health Care Provider course for employment. It is designed to comply with continuing education requirements of the Minnesota Board of Nursing.  Documentation of contract hours including skill demonstration for health care providers is available. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Healthcare Provider CPR card and certificate of completion. Material included.

CPR for Health Care Providers is a prerequisite for EMS and nursing students.

AHA BLS Instructor Course
This American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor’s course is the core educational foundation for all American Heart Association instructors to effectively deliver and provide consistent CPR training. This, plus discipline specific courses allow instructors to achieve consistency and uniformity in their presentation of course material. This course provides instructor candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach BLS courses for healthcare providers and lay rescuers. Membership to an AHA Community Training Center (CTC) is required. Membership with the MnSCU Multi-Regional Training Center (MRTC) is $25. Complete Instructor Packs and material is available for purchase through the MRTC.

Prerequisite: Instructor candidates must provide a current AHA Health care Provider or ARC Professional Rescuer Card.

AHA BLS Instructor Course - Renewal
This American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor Renewal course is a review of the core educational foundation for all American Heart Association instructors to effectively deliver and provide consistent CPR training. This course provides current instructors an opportunity to renew and update their knowledge and skills necessary to teach discipline specific BLS courses for healthcare providers and lay rescuers. Membership to an AHA Community Training Center (CTC) is required. Membership with the MnSCU Multi-Regional Training Center (MRTC) is $25. Complete Instructor Packs are available for purchase through the MRTC.

Prerequisite: Instructors must provide a current AHA BLS Instructor card.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support  (ACLS)
Through the American Heart Association's ACLS course, providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. ACLS is based on simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active, hands-on participation through learning stations where students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as team leader. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care; recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions; managing cardiac arrest; identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes; recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care; ACLS algorithms; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

Prerequisite: Current AHA BLS Health care Providers card.

Intended Audience:
The course is designed for medical providers such as physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support - Renewal
Through the American Heart Association's ACLS Renewal course, providers will renew and enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. ACLS is based on simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active hands-on participation through learning stations where students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as a team leader. Review of realistic simulations reinforces key concepts, proficiency in basic life support care, and recognizing and initiating early management with advanced care. ACLS algorithms reviewed and effective resuscitation team dynamics practiced.

Prerequisite: Current AHA BLS Health care Provider card.

Intended Audience
The course is designed for medical providers such as physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support  (PALS)
The goal of this American Heart Association PALS course is to aid the pediatric health care provider in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes. Skills taught include recognition and treatment of infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest; the systematic approach to pediatric assessment; effective respiratory management; defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion; intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

Prerequisite: Current AHA BLS Healthcare Providers card. Course Length: 14 hours approximately.

Intended Audience
For pediatricians, emergency physicians, family physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare providers who initiate and direct advanced life support in pediatric emergencies.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support - Renewal

CPR Alternatives
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Alternatives includes "new curriculum" that has been developed in cooperation with MnSCU Community Training Center, Children's Hospital and Clinics, and The Phoenix Residence.

- Alternative Techniques of CPR for People with a Tracheotomy: There are many high-tech kids and adults at home with tracheotomies. First Responders, EMT's, and other Healthcare Providers will be trained in the specific technique of suctioning trachs and managing airways.

- Alternative Techniques of CPR in Persons with Developmental Disabilities: This training involves people with scoliosis and kyphosis in orthosis braces and patients in wheelchairs. This type of CPR training has long been needed and is a must for all Healthcare Providers. This course also addresses the current studies on defibrillation of children.
