Students receive help during tough times

Great River Energy recently awarded the Anoka Technical College Foundation $1,500 for student crisis grants. Crisis grants offer financial relief to students experiencing a sudden and unexpected financial crisis for which no other sources of assistance is available. An ongoing supporter of the Anoka Technical College and the college foundation, last year Great River Energy funded a grant of $2,500 for digital multi-meters for the electronics department. "We deeply appreciate Great River Energy’s leadership in supporting technical education. It is through ongoing support of community partners like Great River Energy that we are able to continue to serve our students and area employers,’ said Tess DeGeest, director of resource development at Anoka Technical College.

 

Anoka Technical College Foundation Welcomes New Board Members

"The Anoka Technical College Foundation recently announced five new members to its 18-member board of directors. The foundation is honored to have Jamie Lanigan, Certified Public Accountant with Lanigan and Kolb; State Senator Michael Jungbauer; Rick Meier, founder of Meier Tool; Bruce Sayler, Manager of Regulatory and Governmental Affairs with Connexus Energy; and Kristi Weikel, Attorney and Owner of Weikel Law Firm, LLC. join its efforts to support the students, faculty, programs and vision of the Anoka Technical College”, said John Babcock, foundation president . “The college foundation is growing and maturing. The new board members have a unique mix of talent and expertise that will be invaluable during the foundation’s next phase of growth.”

During its first meeting of the year, the foundation also recognized five retiring board members who together have served the students at Anoka Technical College and the foundation for 42 years. Foundation president John Babcock praised State Representative Jim Abeler, Bob Banse, Ron Nordin, Larry Peterson and Steve Schmidt for their numerous contributions to the foundation and honored them for their diligence in helping the students succeed. Both Representative Jim Abeler and Larry Peterson - retired Vice President of Connexus Energy, Inc. - are veteran leaders and advocates for Anoka Technical College and its mission. During 2002 and 2003, Peterson served as the foundation president. Community business leader and board member Bob Banse served as the foundation treasurer for three years and was the chairperson of the Fiscal Policy Committee. Steve Schmidt made his mark by helping the foundation manage the Albin Peterson Student Loan Program - a program that provides loans to students registered for six or more credits.  Anoka resident Ron Nordin, served on both the fiscal policy and scholarship awards committee. “We cannot say thank you enough for the work all of these individuals have done for the foundation and for the college,” said Babcock.

     

Fall 2009 Scholarship Recipients Announced
